LONDON: Manchester United manager Michael Carrick insists he has no doubts about Lisandro Martinez’s commitment despite the defender’s controversial criticism of the club’s management before a disappointing performance against Chelsea.
Martinez was shown a red card at Stamford Bridge after committing a foul that awarded Chelsea a penalty to give them a 2-0 lead.
In the past month, the Argentina international has also been responsible for Tottenham’s late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, as well as criticising United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, after a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.
The 28-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, sparking speculation that his behaviour, both on and off the pitch, is linked to a desire to leave the club.
However, Carrick has stuck by Martinez and believes the World Cup winner is determined to return to his best form.
“I have absolutely no doubts about his commitment.
“The atmosphere in the dressing room is very good. I’ve said it before, I’ve never questioned the players’ commitment to the club, to me and to each other.
“We need to play better and make better decisions, but commitment is not an issue at all,” Carrick said at a press conference yesterday.
Carrick is now under immense pressure after United went nine games without a win.
The club’s top management is expected to assess its position during the international break after matches against Roma and Aston Villa this week.
The 45-year-old manager is currently in a precarious position, but has chosen to remain positive ahead of two matches that could determine his future at Old Trafford.
